Mellor Community Primary School

Subject Information: History

The intent of our history curriculum is to nurture curiosity and fascination about Britain’s past, promote and develop key transferable skills and appreciate the local and diverse world we live in; improving every child’s cultural capital to support their aspirations. The school and city’s rich history is celebrated and embedded throughout our curriculum to develop a deep understanding of their locality.

Vocabulary development is core to the teaching of History and children are expected to use subject specific and key concept vocabulary when exploring and summarising their understanding.  Children are expected to demonstrate their developing oracy skills through a range of opportunities which include discussion based learning, sharing and asking questions, looking at primary and secondary resources and an oracy assessment.

Through an enquiry based approached, children are encouraged to ask perceptive questions, think critically and question evidence. We aim for children to gain knowledge and skills through experiential learning opportunities and immersive days. This enables them to deepen their knowledge and build strong schema so they remember more.
