Mellor Community Primary School

Subject Information: PSHE/ RSHE

At Mellor, PSHE/RSHE is at the core of all we do, enabling our children to become independent, confident, healthy and responsible members of society, developing the ‘whole child’ intellectually, morally, socially and spiritually.    PSHE is taught from nursery to Year 6 on a weekly basis following and adapting the Jigsaw PSHE scheme. Our PSHE curriculum equips children with relevant and meaningful content, supported through a strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health.  At the heart of our PSHE teaching, we are committed to promoting and enhancing our own school character traits. With an ever- changing society, we are able to provide our children with a strong understanding of the diverse world around them, supporting them in playing a positive role in contributing to the school and the wider community.  We want our children to view themselves as global citizens and aspire for them to leave Mellor as considerate, respectful and resilient individuals.  It is important they are aware, at an age-appropriate level, of different factors which may affect their world and they learn how best to deal with these. A key part of our curriculum is Relationships, Sex and Health Education. Our delivery of RSHE enables our children to learn how to be safe, empowering them to have healthy fulfilling relationships, both now and in the future. Through our whole-school approach, we believe that excellence in these areas leads to high aspirations across the curriculum and beyond. We aspire for the children to view themselves as life-long learners who can be the best they can be.

Our Learning - PSHE/ RSHE

In PSHE, our children have been exploring relationships and what it means to have someone special in their lives 💛 Today, they created thoughtful collages to represent a person who is important to them, using symbols, words, and pictures to show how and why these people matter.

Year 3 visited the local Mosque. They had a tour of the mosque, learnt about Ramdhan and the importance of that month to Muslims. They also learnt why and how Muslims pray.

In PSHE, Year 3 have been working collaboratively to design a garden. They worked on being a landscaper, looked at their budget and planned their event.

3SP loved their Mental Health workshop on how to feel calm with some breathing techniques. They also created a Happy Box!

1JHRE took part in a mental health and wellbeing workshop. We learnt about how we can calm our minds and recognise what makes us happy! We made our own happiness boxes. 😀

4MH had a lovely afternoon working together as a team to design and make a ‘Funny Potato Person’ for our competition in PSHE. They demonstrated teamwork skills such as communication, respect, patience, resilience and creativity.

Our final designs for the ‘Funniest Potato Person’ competition in PSHE. We spoke about what each person did well in the challenge and what they would do differently if they were to do this task again. Well done to all children for working so hard and well as a team!
