Subject Information: Design & Technology
The intent of our DT curriculum is to teach our pupils how to develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world. It also helps them understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook simple dishes.
An importance is placed upon the pupils using their oracy skills to communicate their thoughts and ideas effectively and be able to correctly use subject specific DT vocabulary, especially when evaluating their work. The children have the opportunity to use a variety of secondary sources of information, where this will enhance learning as well as gaining first hand experiences, for example, the use of books, photographs, models, ICT and trips. The context of every lesson will be relevant and engaging for all pupils.
All tasks are based around problem-solving activities which encourage creative thinking and careful planning. Our growing garden allows the pupils to have real-life experiences of planting, growing and using herbs/plants as ingredients in real dishes
The cooking curriculum has been designed with our local community in mind. All dishes are both eggless and vegetarian so they are inclusive to all pupils and some dishes reflect the local area more (for example, making chapattis instead of bread).
